“The History of Myanmar”
The history of Burma is the story of the peoples who came down through the mountain passes and along the river from the Tibetan highlands up north. The reign of King Anawrahta(1044-77) is a convenient starting point for the study of Burmese history. Anawrahta unified the small principalities that instituted Burma into a relatively united states. He promoted Buddhism and in his efforts to convert people to Buddhism. He succeeded, to some extent, to teach and civilize the people. The history of Myanmar began with Bagan Dynasty, the builder of which was King Anawrahta (1044-77) and lasted until the reign of King Bagyi Daw (1819-37). The Anglo-Burmese wars took-place three times in 1824, 1852 and 1885. The British Bombay Burma Company was fined by the Burmese King for illegal logging in Taungoo, located in middle Burma. This was the cause of 3rd Anglo-Burmese war. After that British army moved forward and occupied Mandalay. King Thibaw was arrested on the 29th of November 1885.One month later, on the birth day of Queen Victoria (1.1.1886), Annexation Proclamation was announced that Burmese king was under the British rule. The annexation was proclaimed by Lord Dufferin, the Viceroy of India, on January 1, 1886, as follows:
‘By command of the Queen-Emperor it is hereby notified that the terrories governed by the king Thibaw will no longer be under his rule, but have become part of Her Majesty’s dominions, and will during Her Majesty’s pleasure be administrated by such officers as the Viceroy and Governor-General of India may from time to time appoint.’
After the third Anglo-Burmese war was ended, Burma became a colony, part of Vast India Empire. Burma was granted a position of self-government in 1937, which separated Burma from the colony of India. While Burma was under the British rule, regulations were enacted. The currency of Burma such as – Queen Victoria, Edward (VII), King George (V), King George (VI), image stamped on them were used as rupee and Anna. In June, 1945, after 2nd world war was ended, Burma got independence on 4th January 1948. Later Burma became a member of United Nations on 19th April 1948. Being the 58th member of the United Nations, Burma was re-entitled as Myanmar in 1989.
