“The Golden Triangle”
There are others interesting thing that we want to mention. Today a place that has been known as the Golden Triangle is a border area between Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. Long before the British annexed Myanmar and the French annexed Indo-China, the people of that land made trading among them. The money they used were exchanged and accepted for their mutual benefit. So, it is possible that the money from both sides were used and exchange the value.
Kengtong is a town on the east of Salween River and a capital town of the “Golden Triangle” area. The inhabitants of that area are Shan, A-Khar, Lee-Su, Wahs etc. With the exception of the Shan national, all the other tribes of the people are mostly Christians. As shown in the pictures coins were dug up in the church compound of Kengtong by the native. When the newly church foundation was laid, the coins were discovered packed in water pots buried in the ground. The dug up coins were of numerous sorts, such as U.S., Britian, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia and other coins about 1970 coins in total. It is possible that all the coins were hoarded in that church compound by a certain European missionary personal who happened to traveled in that Kengtong area. They used to carry the coins in the travelling cane baskets. As they carried their cane baskets wherever they travel, their coins in the baskets were damaged. The result was that the rims and surfaces of the coins were blemished. Being ignorant of the value of these coins, the inhabitants of that area used the coins in various ways such as, to decorate the head dress of the women as shown in the pictures. It should be noted that a traditional costume of a native women with silver coins ornaments may cost about some thousand of Thai Baht. These traditional costumes were mostly decorated with French Indo-China coins.
